While working on Pennzoil, I was doodling a little action figure and dubbed him “Oil Master”. My CD saw my drawing and thought it would be a great idea for a learning tool for countermen at auto stores and also a way for them to have Pennzoil top of mind. This comic was going to be a 4-parter if I remember correctly. We actually had Norm Breyfogle draw it for us. He drew Detective Comics (Batman) for several years in the late 80s-early 90s. He was one of my favorites so this was a dream come true.

Unfortunately, after getting through pencils and word bubbles, the client put it in front of focus groups and there it died, like so many good ideas.

The idea was that there were champions for timely oil change––and they were constantly fighting the minions of “extended drain interval”.
